BUMN Minister Erick Thohir claims PT Kimia Farma Tbk is capable of producing antiviral drugs in the country.

According to him, the antivirus that was successfully produced by the BUMN was Avigan.

“Alhamdulillah, yesterday Kimia Farma was able to produce Avigan, which has been imported into the Favipiravir category,” Erick said in a webinar on Healthy Transportation for Advanced Indonesia, Tuesday (15/9).

Erick hopes that this success can reduce Indonesia’s dependence on antivirus imports. In addition to suppressing imports, Erick hopes that domestic drug production can lead to a downstream process.

Erick also hopes that Kimia Farma’s virus production can improve the quality of research and technology used in industry.

“Now we can make it ourselves because we don’t want to continue depending on imported raw materials and we continue to do research on herbs that can help,” he said.

Previously, the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Chair of the Committee for Handling Covid-19 and National Economic Recovery (PC-PEN) Airlangga Hartarto stated that the government was increasing the production of antiviral drugs such as Tamiflu or Oseltamivir by 480 thousand tablets.

This is to increase the need for medicine for people who are currently being hit by the spread of the corona virus or covid-19.

“It will increase by nearly 480 thousand next week,” said Airlangga.

Apart from adding Oseltamivir, Airlangga stated that the government is also increasing the production of other types of drugs. However, there are no details on the quota.

“Then with regard to Favipiravir (also known as Avigan), it happens that the patent has been released, so it will also be produced by Kimia Farma,” he said.

Apart from antiviral drugs, the government is also conducting clinical trials on the Covid-19 vaccine with the Red and White label. If the clinical trial is successful, the vaccine will be produced by PT Bio Farma starting next year.

The target is that 30 million to 40 million vaccines will be produced. The government will provide funds of IDR 5 trillion for the procurement of this vaccine.
