Government allows elderly to take covid-19 vaccine

As is known, on February 5, 2021, the Food and Drug Administration (BPOM), issued an approval for the use of the emergency use of authorization (EUA) of the CoronaVac vaccine for ages over 60 years. According to the Head of BPOM, Penny Lukito, the policy was carried out based on the consideration of the number of victims who died from being infected with the corona virus in this age group.

Based on data from the Ministry of Health, the percentage of elderly people who have been exposed to the corona virus in Indonesia is 10%, but the total who died due to Covid-19 reached 50%. This shows a big risk for the elderly in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

For information, the Covid-19 vaccination program for the 18-59 year age group has been running gradually since January 13, 2021. Through the vaccination program, the government and the people of Indonesia have high hopes that herd immunity will soon be realized in the not too distant future.

Worldwide, health workers are prioritized as recipients of the first phase vaccine, including the elderly. WHO recommends that they have a double risk, namely professions that are prone to Covid-19 exposure.

Apart from vaccinating elderly health workers, Fatmawati Hospital is also still vaccinating health workers aged 18-59 years. As of February 10, 2021, the number of targets to be vaccinated is 2,732 people. Of these, 1,971 people have been given the vaccine, while 661 people have been postponed or canceled due to their health conditions.
