Traveling to Labuan Bajo just got a whole lot easier, thanks to the introduction of the Labuan Bajo-Kuala Lumpur flight route, which commenced on September 3, 2024. This new international connection has sparked significant interest from foreign tourists, with approximately 1,800 visitors reported since the launch.

Veranita Yosephine, CEO of Indonesia AirAsia, shared the exciting news, noting an impressive increase of over 85% in tourist arrivals since early September through Labuan Bajo-Kuala Lumpur flights.

“About 95% of passengers on AirAsia’s international flights are foreign tourists,” she remarked during the webinar titled “International Flights to Labuan Bajo: Shaping the Entryway for Tourism Development in NTT.” The event was organized by the Labuan Bajo Flores Authority (BPOLBF) on September 26, 2024.

This surge in arrivals bodes well for Labuan Bajo’s tourism sector. Veranita expressed optimism that the new connectivity will further enhance the region’s international profile. “We hope this connectivity elevates Labuan Bajo to a higher international standing,” she added.

Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno highlighted Labuan Bajo’s importance as the primary gateway to Komodo National Park and various other natural attractions. He emphasized that accessibility is a critical factor in the region’s success.

With the availability of direct flights, a significant rise in tourist visits is anticipated, unlocking new development opportunities for tourism in East Nusa Tenggara.

“We believe this area has the potential to attract more foreign tourists. Expanding international flights is a strategic move that will create new opportunities for our tourism sector,” Sandiaga noted in a press release received by Kompas.com on September 27, 2024.

He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders—local governments, tourism operators, and community members—to ensure that infrastructure and tourism service developments are in harmony with environmental preservation and cultural integrity. This collaborative approach aims to create a sustainable future for Labuan Bajo’s thriving tourism landscape.
