BMKG Calls for Shipping Safety Warning Due to Extreme Weather

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned the Ship Master and the public that there would be extreme weather in several regions of Indonesia. High waves are also predicted to follow.

BMKG warns of the potential for extreme weather for the period 26 December 2022 at 07.00 WIB to 27 December 2022 at 07.00 WIB.

With this call, the Directorate General of Sea Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation has prepared some mitigation measures to anticipate extreme weather.

Director of the Sea and Coast Guard Unit (KPLP) Mugen S Sartoto said that currently bad weather and high waves are occurring in some waters in Indonesia which of course has an impact on shipping safety.

Therefore, the Directorate General of Sea Transportation appealed to Harbor Masters, Ship Operators including Ship Masters, and the public to always prioritize shipping safety.

“All Syahbandar, shipping/crossing transportation companies, and the public should study the weather news issued by the BMKG periodically every six hours,” said Mugen, Monday (26/12/2022).

He continued, if the weather conditions jeopardize the safety of shipping, the harbormaster is asked not to issue a Sailing Approval Letter or SPB, and if any party forces the ship to depart, it must not depart until the weather conditions along the waters to be sailed are completely safe for sailing.

Furthermore, he asked for the loading and unloading of goods to be monitored periodically to ensure that the activities are carried out in an orderly and smooth manner, the cargo is lashing, the ship is not over drafted and the stability of the ship remains good.

“All ship operators, especially the skipper, should pay attention to the most updated weather news regarding wind and wave conditions and ask the harbormaster for consideration before the ship departs,” he said.

Furthermore, when the cruise encounters bad weather, the ship is expected to immediately take shelter in a safe place with the provision that the ship must remain ready to move.

The captain of the ship is also asked to re-check the conditions of loading including the distribution of cargo loads, lashing (bonds) of cargo including dangerous cargo if any, and ensure the ship has been equipped with evidence of a safety certificate in seaworthy condition before the ship departs.

If a ship accident occurs, immediately coordinate with the local harbormaster and take countermeasures for oil spills at sea and other consequences, including delays and salvage activities.

“We are alerting Patrol boats and continuing to coordinate with Basarnas, TNI/Polri in anticipation of the possibility of sea accidents,” Mugen explained.

Mugen also appealed to the public, especially prospective ship passengers, to always follow safety rules and instructions from ship officers.
