Tropical cyclone Freddy or tropical cyclone 11S is a tropical cyclone that formed in the southern Indian Ocean

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning of high waves that may occur in several Indonesian waters on March 4-5, 2023.

The agency stated that the wind patterns in the northern part of Indonesia are dominantly moving from North-East with wind speeds ranging from 5-27 knots, while in the southern part of Indonesia, the dominant wind patterns are from South-West to North-West with wind speeds ranging from 5-25 knots.

According to BMKG, “the potential for high waves in several areas may pose a risk to maritime safety,” as they can be as high as 1.25-2.5 meters.

BMKG identified some regions with the highest wind speeds and wave heights.

These regions include the North Natuna Sea, the waters of the Anambas and Natuna Islands, the eastern part of the Java Sea, the waters of the Sabalana and Selayar Islands, the Sumbawa Sea, the Flores Sea, the waters of the Sermata and Tanimbar Islands, the waters of the Aru Islands, and the Arafura Sea.

The increased wave heights, as a result of these conditions, can potentially occur in the waters north of Sabang, the waters west of Aceh and the Mentawai Islands, the waters of Bengkulu and western Lampung, the western and southern parts of the Sunda Strait, the waters of southern Banten and East Java, the southern part of the South Indian Ocean off Banten, the waters of southern Bali and Sumbawa, the Bali-Lombok Strait, and the southern Alas Strait.

Other regions where these conditions may occur include the Sumba Strait, the southern part of the Sape Strait, the waters of southern Sumba Island, the waters of Sawu Island-Kupang-Rote Island, the Sawu Sea, the southern part of the South Indian Ocean off Bali and NTT, the waters east of Bintan and the Lingga Islands, the waters north of Bangka Island, the eastern part of the Java Sea, the waters north of East Java, the Bali Sea and Sumbawa Sea, the southern part of the Makassar Strait, the waters of Sabalana and Selayar Islands, the waters of Baubau and Wakatobi Islands, and the waters north of Flores Island.

BMKG always urges people to be cautious, especially fishermen who operate fishing boats with wind speeds exceeding 15 knots and wave heights above 1.25 meters.

The agency advises the public to stay alert and follow any official updates or warnings about weather conditions to avoid any potential risks.
