Covid-19 Rises Again, Caused by BA.4 and BA.5 Variants

The Covid-19 pandemic is not over yet. In fact, the number of Covid-19 cases in Indonesia has increased again. Yesterday there were 1000 new cases. This increase was suspected due to the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 mutations.

Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin while speaking at the Bogor Presidential Palace complex, West Java, emphasized that the government is currently still observing and studying the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 variants which are considered to be the cause of the cases increase.

Based on data from the Covid-19 Task Force, yesterday Indonesia recorded additional confirmed cases reaching 1,242 cases, higher than the previous day which recorded 930 cases.

From the government’s initial observations, the cases peak caused by these two variants.

“Delta peaks at 60,000 cases a day, we will estimate later based on our data, the peak is at 20,000 per day,” said Budi, Thursday (16/6/2022).

However, Budi emphasized that the fatality rate, or the death rate due to the two subvariants, BA.4 and BA.5, was much lower than Omicron and Delta. The estimate is one-twelfth of the two variants.

“We believe that there will be a maximum increase of 20,000 per day after one month has been identified in the third, fourth week of July and will decrease again,” said Budi.

On the other hand, the Government Spokesperson for the Handling of Covid-19 Wiku Adisasmito stated that there had been an increase in weekly cases from the previous 1,800 cases at the end of May 2022, to 3,600 cases last week.

“Not only weekly cases, but active cases also increased at the end of May 2022, active cases were around 2900. Meanwhile, as of June 13, 2022, it was around 4,900,” said Wiku.

Wiku assessed that if the increase in Covid-19 cases was not mitigated properly, the number would continue to soar.

According to Wiku, the current increase in cases requires joint efforts to suppress it as much as possible. Given that Indonesia has managed to maintain a decline in cases. As a result, daily and weekly cases remained low for two consecutive months.

“It is hoped that this appeal can strengthen efforts to mobilize a healthier community even though the Covid-19 pandemic will be declared over,” he explained.

Based on data seen from the website http://covid19.go.id, DKI Jakarta contributed 730 cases of Covid-19.

Then followed by West Java with the addition of 216 Covid-19 cases. Then, Banten with the addition of 146 Covid-19 cases. This number is the result of tracing through the examination of 79,001 specimens carried out using the real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and rapid molecular test (TCM) methods.
