Denmark Will Close Malls and Shops During Christmas and New Year Holidays

The Danish prime minister said that Denmark will close malls and shops during the Christmas-New Year holidays. This is because cases of Corona virus infection continue to increase.

As reported by AFP, Thursday (17/12/2020) Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said this closure only applies to shops and malls. Food stores and pharmacies are excluded.

“Denmark will be completely closed from Friday, December 25 to January 3,” said Mette Frederiksen, Wednesday (16/12/2020)

Shopping malls start to close this Thursday, while the next phase of activity will close on December 21 before non-essential shops close since Christmas Day.

Earlier this week, Denmark extended national restrictions that have been applied already in major cities and in most countries, including the closure of bars and restaurants, schools, sports facilities and cultural centers.

On Wednesday (16/12), health authorities recorded nearly 3,700 new cases of Corona and 14 deaths in 24 hours in Denmark.

Denmark seems to hit 120,000 total cases and 1,000 deaths soon, and Prime Minister Frederiksen said authorities fear that next January and February could be the pandemic’s worst months.

Prime Minister Frederiksen urged Danish citizens to celebrate Christmas with only small gatherings.

Earlier, the World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday (16/12) urged Europeans to wear masks when celebrating Christmas and New Year with their families. WHO warns of a “high risk” of a surge in Corona infection cases in early 2021.
