DKI Jakarta Provincial Government Will Expand Free Internet Service to Hamlet Level

As an effort to support education through free internet access, the DKI Jakarta Department of Communication, Informatics, and Statistics (Diskominfotik) is encouraged to boost free internet services, or JakWiFi, to the level of the neighborhood association (RW).

Secretary of Commission A of the DKI DPRD, Karyatin Subiyantoro, said that apart from supporting education, the DKI Provincial Government’s free internet access must also support the convenience of government apparatus at the RW level in carrying out their duties.

“Because the RW is a gathering place for the dasawisma when making reports that must be updated immediately,” said Karyatin through a press release as quoted on Tuesday (8/3/2022).

To support this program, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is targeting 9,413 JakWiFi points to be built throughout the capital city in collaboration with the Telecommunication Network Operator Association (APJATEL) and PT Bali Towerindo Sentra (Molecool).

Currently, there are 5,665 public Wi-Fi points that residents can use for free with details, 1,497 JakWiFi locations provided directly by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government.

Furthermore, DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said more than 24 million people used a free wireless internet connection or Wi-Fi spread over 9,250 points in the capital city during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to him, the internet network was provided to support remote school children and people working from home due to restrictions on community activities related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
