Electric Motors Can Be a Game Changer

The government continues to encourage the transition of conventional vehicles to electric vehicles to realize a carbon-emission-free. Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi said the use of electric motors could be a game changer.

“So the market is huge and this can be a game changer that can accelerate this transition,” he said in his official statement, Wednesday (5/10/2022).

He explained that currently, the number of motorcycle users in Indonesia is around 133 million. From these data, he estimates there are 5 million requests in a year. In fact, before the pandemic, there were 10 million.

This high demand is considered to be the first step in the transition to electric vehicles starting from electric motors.

Therefore, he also supports the government to target as many as 2 million electric motorcycles in Indonesia by 2025.

The Minister of Transportation revealed that countries in the world have agreed to reduce emission levels by 29 percent in 2030 and zero emissions in 2060 and this is not an easy target. However, he believes there will be an equilibrium or a new balance point that will come more quickly with the synergy and collaboration of the government, universities, industry players, and the community.

According to him, three main things that must be considered and continue to be improved are the first, namely the quality of the battery, increasing the number of charging stations or places where battery replacement can be obtained easily, and the quality of the engine from electric vehicles.

More and more users of electric motorcycles, apart from nourishing the earth from air pollution, are also expected to help reduce fuel energy subsidies which reached Rp502 trillion.

He also hopes that this subsidy will decrease along with the increasing number of electric vehicle users.

“The government has pushed through regulations, universities with research, and industry players to carry out massively and produce electric vehicles at more economical prices and with good quality,” said the Minister of Transportation.

Some regulations and policies have been issued by the Ministry of Transportation to follow up on Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 55/2019 concerning the Acceleration of the Battery-Based Electric Motor Vehicle Program for Road Transportation.

The next regulation is Presidential Instruction (Inpres) No. 7/2022 on the Use of Battery-Based Electric Motorized Vehicles as Operational Service Vehicles and/or Individual Vehicles for Central Government Agencies and Regional Governments.

On the same occasion, SKP Diaz Hendropriyono said the discussion this time focused on electric motorcycles because in Indonesia there are more motorcycles than cars. In addition, the price of electric motorcycles can also be more competitive because there are more manufacturers of these vehicles.
