A unique phenomenon is happening in Indonesia. Cold air temperatures in the middle of the dry season are being felt in some areas recently, like Bromo. In the morning the temperature feels very cold or commonly called bediding, but during the day the weather turns extreme into the scorching heat. BMKG explains this phenomenon.
According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency, this is a normal natural phenomenon and often occurs in the dry season.
The reason is because of the minimal number of clouds during the dry season so that long-wave radiation into space does not have a barrier, automatically the air will cool faster.
“Because there are no clouds, shortwave radiation received from the sun during the day results in no heating at night,” said Tonny Setyawan Prakirawan of BMKG Juanda when contacted by Suara Surabaya Radio, Thursday (28/7/2022).
Apart from the clouds, Tonny explained, another factor that caused this bediding phenomenon was the wind blowing from Australia, which was in winter, to Indonesia.
“The apparent position of the sun has just returned from the north latitude back to the south but is still in the northern hemisphere. In Australia, relatively less heat is received due to winter, so it adds to the relatively cold temperature in Indonesia,” he explained.
This phenomenon, said Tommy, will last until next September because October has entered the rainy season.
“The sun is now in the north if September is heading to the equator in the southern hemisphere. The apparent position of the sun on September 23 is at the equator, so Indonesia, which is located in the south latitude close to the equator, is starting to get hot, “said Tonny.
“September 24, the sun has entered the southern zone so that the influence of temperature is no longer relatively cold,” he added.
Then related to cold temperatures in the last few days the temperature was below 25 degrees at 05.00 WIB in the morning. However, this is still far below the normal temperature monitored by BMKG Juanda in the last 30 years.
“The normal temperature recorded by the Juanda BMKG in July was 16 degrees. This means that the temperature a few days ago was still not the lowest, and could be even lower because it was 16 degrees Celsius in the 30-year BMKG Juanda data,” he concluded.
Furthermore, some areas even experience extremely low temperatures, one of which is in the Bromo area.
Recently, the temperature in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) has dropped dramatically. The temperature in this area reaches an extreme point that reaches 2 degrees Celsius. Bromo freezes!

Teguh said that the decrease in temperature and the bediding phenomenon at Bromo was caused by two things. The first is the Australian Monsoon.
The freezing phenomenon of the Bromo area is common in the dry season. According to Teguh, this usually takes place from July to August.
