Network disturbances due to the Marine Cable Communication System (SKKL) fiber optic have occurred recently in the Merauke-Timika region. This news was confirmed by the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kemkominfo) and PT Telkom Indonesia.

The Minister of Communication and Information, Johnny G Plate, said that the disturbance occurred at the backbone of the national telecommunications. In the past few weeks, there have even been two optical cable disturbances in Indonesia.

The first is the Jakarta-Surabaya SKKL fiber and the second is the Merauke-Timika SKKL. For the Jakarta-Surabaya SKKL, said Johnny, the repairs were completed on May 6, 2022. Meanwhile, in Merauke-Timika, it is still in progress.

“Some time ago there was also a disturbance in the SKKL cable from Maluku to Merauke to Timika, there was also a disturbance. Now mitigation is being carried out to find out what caused it,” said Johnny, Tuesday, May 10, 2022.

Because the disturbance occurred at sea, Johnny continued, the repair would require the deployment of ships. However, due to the limited availability of ships, it will take a longer time in the process of deploying ships for repairs.

“Currently, the number of Indonesian ships that have the capability to deploy fiber optic networks at sea is very limited,” he continued.

In the repair of the Jakarta-Surabaya SKKL, the ship used is DPL or Cable Ship DPL. Where after carrying out its duties, the ship needs time to do maintenance before working again.

“There must be refueling, checking the condition of the ship, and the readiness of the ship. So the ship must sail to Batam for completeness and preparation,” said Johnny.

The Minister of Communication and Information said that after departing from Batam, the ship would only depart for Merauke to repair the Merauke-Timika submarine cable network. It is targeted that the repairs will be completed on May 26, 2022.

Furthermore, during the restoration of the Sea Cable Communication System (SKKL) network for the Merauke-Timika route, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology together with PT. Telkom Indonesia prioritizes voice and internet telecommunications services.

Therefore, the Minister of Communication and Information, Johnny G. Plate, appealed to the people in the Papua region to take advantage of the telecommunications network for priority purposes first.

“Kominfo and PT Telkom will prepare this for specific needs so that telecommunications services will continue to run well, although not as large as those provided through the backbone network,” he explained in a press conference, Tuesday (10/5).

The Minister of Communication and Information stated that he will continue to monitor the quality of telecommunications services in the Papua region so that it can meet the needs of the community until recovery is carried out.

Previously, the Ministry of Communications and Informatics together with PT. Telkom Indonesia has prepared an alternative network to mitigate the disruption of the SKKL Sulawesi Maluku Papua Cable System (SMPCS) owned by PT. Telkom Indonesia route Merauke-Timika.

According to the Minister of Communication and Information, when the Merauke-Timika SKKL disruption occurs, the traffic demand capacity is estimated at 42 GB. Therefore, the Ministry of Communications and Informatics and PT Telkom Indonesia has prepared alternative networks as a mitigation measure.

“Recovery is done by utilizing a 3.25 GB backup link. From Palapa Ring, it is 1.25 GB and satellite is 2 GB,” he said.
