The Number of Foreign Tourist Visits Surpasses 1.03 Million During February 2024, Malaysia Leads the Way!

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has reported a notable increase in foreign tourist arrivals to Indonesia in February 2024. According to BPS data, a total of 1.03 million foreign tourists visited the country during this period, marking an 11.67% increase compared to the previous month and a significant 38.24% rise compared to the same month last year.

Breaking down the numbers, the majority of foreign tourists, totaling 890,860 visits, entered through the main gateways, while 145,173 visits were recorded at border entrances.

Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, Acting Head of BPS, shared insights during the BPS Release on Monday (1/4/2024), stating, “The total number of foreign tourist visits in February 2024 reached 1.03 million.”

Looking at the cumulative data for January-February 2024, BPS reported a total of 1.96 million foreign tourist visits, representing a substantial 26.87% increase compared to the same period last year.

Despite the steady recovery and growth, Amalia highlighted that the cumulative foreign tourist visits in the first two months of 2024 still remain relatively lower compared to the pre-pandemic period. In 2019, for instance, the January-February period saw a total of 2.44 million foreign tourist visits.

By nationality, Malaysia emerged as the top contributor to foreign tourist arrivals in Indonesia in February 2024. Malaysian tourists accounted for 214,100 visits, marking a 37.93% increase from the previous month.

Singapore followed closely behind with 112,800 visits, while China recorded 105,300 visits, Australia 101,600 visits, and India 47,900 visits.

The surge in visits from Chinese tourists was particularly noteworthy, with a staggering 188.97% increase compared to February 2023. Among the foreign tourists arriving in February 2024, 43.81% entered through Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport.

Of these visitors, 20.4% were Australian nationals.

“In terms of the average length of stay, tourists spent an average of 7.01 nights in Indonesia,” Amalia added.
