Ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said that high-intensity rain is still predicted to occur in Indonesia until early 2023.
BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati explained this was due to La Nina or a natural phenomenon that causes colder air or experiences higher rainfall until now it is still in moderate condition.
“The condition of La Nina is still moderate to weak. This means that there is still an increase in rain intensity. The peak of the rainy season is predicted to occur from December 2022 to January,” Dwikorita explained in a Joint Working Meeting with Commission V DPR RI, Tuesday (13/12/2022).
According to Dwikorita, rainfall in the high to a high category is expected to occur from 21 December to 31 December 2022 or to coincide with the Christmas and New Year 2023 moments.
During that period, Dwikorita said, the rainfall rate would reach 150 mm/10 days. Rainfall in the high to a very high category is predicted to occur in parts of Banten, a small part of West Java, a part of Central Java, a small part of West Kalimantan, and a part of western South Sulawesi.
Meanwhile, Dwikorita appealed to the public to be wary of the increase in rainfall levels that will occur in the Nataru 2023 period.
This is because the level of rainfall that should be able to fall evenly within 10 days is predicted to occur within a few hours. This will trigger extreme rain.
“It is necessary to anticipate 150 mm/10 days with the impact of global climate change which should fall evenly for 10 days, can be deposited immediately within a few hours, so that will cause extreme rain. That’s what we need to be aware of,” said Dwikorita.
