Jokowi’s arrival to Germany is not only to attend the G7 Summit but there are other big goals. Indonesia is trying to persuade Germany to collaborate in optimizing renewable energy in Indonesia. This is a follow-up meeting between the two countries which was previously discussed at the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java, (16/6).
This step is the realization of the government’s hope to make Indonesia a zero-emission country as well as a country based on green/renewable energy.
On the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Elmau, on Monday (27/6/2022) local time, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) held a bilateral meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Citing an official statement from the Presidential Secretariat, Tuesday (28/6/2022), Jokowi and the German Chancellor discussed strengthening economic cooperation and the G20 Presidency.
“As the largest economies in Europe and Southeast Asia, the opportunities for economic cooperation between Indonesia and Germany are huge. In the new and renewable energy sector, and the high-tech industrial sector,” Jokowi said.
In the new and renewable energy sector, Jokowi hopes that Germany can become a partner in processing the potential of 474 Gigawatts of new and renewable energy sources in Indonesia.
On the occasion, Jokowi also appreciated the appreciation of Germany’s Green Infrastructure Initiative with a funding commitment of EUR 2.5 billion for 5 years.
As for the high-tech industrial sector, Jokowi said that Indonesia had prepared an electric vehicle ecosystem from upstream to downstream, from mining and nickel smelting to the production of batteries and electric cars.
Jokowi sees the potential for cooperation in the development of the semiconductor industry and making this industry part of the global chip supply chain.
“Indonesia is also ready to follow up the cooperation in the development of the German Industrial Quarter which will later become a production base and global supply chain,” he explained.
On the occasion, Jokowi also expressed his appreciation for Germany’s support for the Indonesian Presidency at the G20.
During a very complex and difficult world situation, Jokowi hopes that Indonesia and Germany will continue to maintain the G20 so that it can remain a catalyst for economic recovery.
At the previous meeting, Indonesian President Joko Widodo met German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java, Thursday (16/6/2022). This bilateral meeting discussed opportunities to increase cooperation and investment between the two countries.
Jokowi offered Germany cooperation and investment in renewable energy to support Indonesia’s energy transition program.
“I invite Germany to be Indonesia’s partner in cultivating the potential of renewable energy sources in Indonesia,” Jokowi was quoted as saying via the Presidential Secretariat Youtube, Thursday (16/6/2022).
Jokowi also invited Germany to support the establishment of Energy Transition Financing and the carbon market in Indonesia, and research cooperation in the fields of hydrogen energy and electric cars. In this bilateral meeting, the two leaders also agreed to strengthen cooperation on climate change.
Jokowi expressed his appreciation for Germany’s support in the development of a green infrastructure initiative worth EUR 2.5 billion and the integration of green transmission in North Sulawesi which was valued at 150 million Euros and a geothermal energy development pilot project worth 300 million Euros.
