The Indonesian government continues to make Indonesia a zero-emission country through various means. Recently, Deputy Minister of Environment and Forestry Alue Dohong said, Indonesia is committed to reducing carbon emissions by 29% by 2030, or the equivalent of 834 million tons of CO2.
According to the Minister of Environment and Forestry, several sectors contribute the largest carbon emissions in Indonesia, namely forestry, land use, and energy use.
“From forestry itself, the target is to reduce 140 million tons of CO2 equivalent until 2030. Efforts are being made to control the rate of deforestation and forest degradation. We also prevent forest fires, and also restore mangroves,” said Alue.
Efforts to reduce national emissions are neither easy nor cheap. According to him, an investment of around Rp 201 trillion is needed until 2030.
Later, this investment will not only be met from the state budget, but will involve the private sector, international grants, and public participation.
Alue said the government had issued Presidential Regulation No. 98/2021, regarding the economic value of carbon. In this Presidential Regulation, there are at least three instruments that are implemented to support this effort.
These three instruments are emissions trading, performance-based payments, and carbon taxes. “There is also the preparation of a fourth instrument, namely a combination of existing schemes,” he said again.
Furthermore, as previously reported, the government continues to strive to make Indonesia a country based on renewable energy or green energy. One of these efforts is to cooperate with developed countries such as Germany.
On the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Elmau, on Monday (27/6/2022) local time, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) held a bilateral meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Citing an official statement from the Presidential Secretariat, Tuesday (28/6/2022), Jokowi and the German Chancellor discussed strengthening economic cooperation and the G20 Presidency.
“As the largest economies in Europe and Southeast Asia, the opportunities for economic cooperation between Indonesia and Germany are huge. In the new and renewable energy sector, and the high-tech industrial sector,” Jokowi said.
In the new and renewable energy sector, Jokowi hopes that Germany can become a partner in processing the potential of 474 Gigawatts of new and renewable energy sources in Indonesia.
On the occasion, Jokowi also appreciated Germany’s Green Infrastructure Initiative with a funding commitment of EUR 2.5 billion for 5 years.
