The relaxation of travel restrictions in Indonesia following the decline in Covid-19 cases has resulted in a return to normal mobility for the public. As a result, the Ministry of Transportation predicts that the number of airplane passengers during the 2023 Eid al-Fitr holiday could reach 6.2 million people.

According to Adita Irawati, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Transportation, the number of airplane passengers during the 2023 Eid al-Fitr holiday is expected to be better than last year due to the increasing interest of the public in traveling by air.

“Based on our survey, the potential use of airplanes during the holiday season could reach around 6.2 million passengers. This is the total accumulation over several days of the holiday,” she explained when contacted on Wednesday, March 8, 2023.

Adita also stated that the prospect of passenger growth is supported by Indonesia’s entry into the post-endemic phase of Covid-19. This is marked by the lifting of travel restrictions or bans.

Additionally, the government has also lifted the Community Activity Restrictions Enforcement (PPKM), which will further increase the mobility of the public.

The lifting of these movement restrictions will also boost economic activity, which will have an impact on the public’s interest in traveling or returning to their hometowns during the holiday season.

Furthermore, airplanes are considered a fast and comfortable mode of transportation.

Last year, the Ministry of Transportation data showed that the number of airplane passengers during the 2022 Eid al-Fitr holiday reached 3.1 million people.

This figure represented a decrease of about 25.6 percent compared to the number of passengers before the pandemic in 2019, which was 4.2 million people.

Overall, the number of passengers during the 2022 Eid al-Fitr holiday season was 13.04 million people, or a 22.6 percent decrease compared to the 2019 figure of 16.84 million passengers.

The Ministry of Transportation has prepared 270 domestic flight routes connecting 122 cities within the country.

In addition, 112 international routes connecting 48 cities outside the country from 22 countries have also been prepared.

In terms of the aircraft fleet, the Ministry of Transportation has prepared 394 planes for regular flights, and this number is expected to increase during the 2023 holiday season.
