Indonesia Targets Selling 2.7 Million Electric Cars by 2030

Indonesia is estimated to be able to sell 2.7 million electric vehicles by 2030. This is stated by the Expert Staff of the Minister of Industry in the Field of Strengthening Domestic Industry Capability of the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) Ignatius Warsito. The projection is conveyed by citing McKinsey’s research.

“Indonesia has one of the highest potential markets in the world for electric vehicles (EV). By 2030, Indonesia is expected to have annual sales of 1.2 million two-wheeled EVs and 1.5 million four-wheeled EVs,” explained Warsito at the G20 agenda titled Shiting Toward Higher Value-Added Industries, Monday (14/2).

He explained that every 1 million electric cars used can save US$100 million in Indonesian oil imports. This of course can reduce the use of fuel oil.

Ignatius sees Indonesia’s potential as an EV consumer and producer alike. This is because Indonesia has a large population and natural resources needed to assemble electric vehicles.

“Electric vehicles can help Indonesia’s dependence on oil, it is estimated that oil imports can be cut by US$100 million per year for every 1 million electric cars on the road,” he explained.

Not long ago, the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Panjaitan also targeted millions of electric vehicles to pave the streets of Indonesia. He projects that 2 million electric cars will be paved by 2030.

“Indonesia plans to implement 2 million electric cars by 2030,” he said at the 2022 Mandiri Investment Forum, last Wednesday (9/2).

These targets are also the government’s move to shift to a green economy and use of non-emissions transportation. The goal is to protect the environment in the future.

Indonesia is expected to become an emission-free country in the future and free from the greenhouse effect.

Furthermore, related to the green economy in protecting the environment, The government is preparing North Kalimantan Province as a green industrial area. The industrial area has an area of 16,000 hectares.

Jokowi explained, if this project is successful, then Indonesia will become a large industrial country that the world should be recommended with.

The first phase of the green economy project is targeted to be completed within the next 4-5 years.
