Jokowi Launches Papua Football Academy

In hopes of creating another football legend from Papua, the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, inaugurated the Papua Football Academy (PFA). The inauguration took place at the Lukas Enembe Stadium, Jayapura Regency, Wednesday (31/8/2022) this morning.

Jokowi said that so far Papua has produced many talented talents who have become legends of Indonesian football, such as Rully Nere, Aples Tecuari, Alexander Pulalo, Ellie Aiboy, and Boaz Solossa.

“Want to be like them, these legends? The path is already in front of all of my children, namely the Papua Football Academy,” said Jokowi, quoted from the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube show, Wednesday (31/8/2022).

Jokowi said that Papua Football Academy students will be trained through regular training and will continue to be accompanied by coaches with good reputations. He also hopes that the Papua Football Academy will be put to good use to gain knowledge in the field of football.

“Earlier, the President Director (President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia, Tony Wenas) has said, there are 477 children selected and now there are only 30 children. These are seeds, well-selected talents, talented talents,” Jokowi said.

He added that in addition to soccer training, the Papua Football Academy also prepared formal education so that the academy participants continued their studies.

“We hope that later they will become football players who have a strong self-confidence, strong character, who are competitive, who are sporty, but also clever and smart,” said Jokowi.

“Formal education is also prepared so that we continue to go to school. We hope that in the future we will become football players who have strong self-confidence, strong character, who are competitive, who are sporty, but also clever and smart,” he said.

Furthermore, Jokowi said that the construction of the PFA was based on the opening of the XX National Sports Week (PON) in Papua in 2021.

At that time he asked the President Director of PT Freeport Tony Wenas to commit to building human resources (HR) in Papua.

“In November last year, after the opening of the PON, I invited the President Director of PT Freeport Mr. Tomny Wenas to come to the hotel. At that time, I said, Mr. President, I asked PT Freeport for commitment to human resource development in Papua,” said Jokowi.

“And I ask that the facilities used for this PON can be well maintained. And I ask for a football academy to be built in here, and today the Papua Football Academy has been realized,” he added.
