Kominfo Will Anticipate Surges in Data Traffic during the Christmas and New Year Holidays

The Christmas and New Year holidays are predicted to cause a spike in data traffic. For this reason, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kemenkominfo) is preparing to anticipate this surge.

The Minister of Communication and Informatics (Menkominfo), Johnny G. Plate, said that anticipatory steps are always taken every year. But this time, it is predicted that the traffic will be different from the previous two years.

He said, in 2020 and 2021, people will spend more time at home, such as working from home (WFH). That way, the utilization of broadband or fixed broadband services is more than mobile.

“Right now, people may have started to travel, so cellular traffic is important,” said Johnny while visiting the Telecommunication Equipment Testing Center (BBPPT) in Depok, Friday (12/16/2022).

Regarding the anticipatory steps taken, he admitted that he had coordinated with cellular and network operators to maintain and ensure the availability of adequate bandwidth during Nataru.

In fact, Johnny added, his party has currently carried out a series of network tests and tests to monitor the frequency spectrum and maintain the amount of bandwidth when there is a migration of people.

“Previously there were a lot of them in Jakarta, for example, it needed a large bandwidth, when the people of Jakarta go outside the area, then the bandwidth will move, this must also be regulated,” he said.

However, so far he has not been able to predict how much data traffic will increase during the holidays. Because this will depend on how many people are traveling and where they are going.

Nevertheless, according to Johnny, there is still a need for additional equipment such as Compact Mobile BTS (COMBAT) infrastructure to increase capacity following the movement of people who will be traveling.

“We will follow the prediction [of the movement] from the mobile movement of the people. That will be seen in the BTS movement, where are they moving,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) predicts that this year around 44.1 million people will travel during the Nataru holiday.
