Logistics and Transportation Business Continues to Grow in Q1/2022

The government’s struggle to control the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia is starting to show results. Some business sectors such as logistics and transportation are starting to recover.

Based on the contribution from the business sector, the recovery in the transportation and warehousing or logistics sector is one of the drivers of recovery in the first three months of 2022.

Indonesia’s economic growth in the first quarter of 2022 reached 5.01 percent year-on-year (YoY). This is according to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS)

In the first quarter of 2022, the transportation and warehousing sector grew 15.79 percent (YoY) with a distribution of 4.62 percent.

Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Margo Yuwono, explained that the growth in this sector was due to the increasing mobility of the people, which had an impact on public transportation.

“This [growth] of transportation and warehousing is easy to understand because mobility is getting better in the first quarter, and it will automatically have an impact on growth for public transportation,” Margo explained at a press conference, Monday (9/5/2022).

Community Mobility affects logistics sector

This increase in community mobility is influenced by several reasons. Some of these reasons are the decline in cases of Covid-19 transmission and also the easing of PPKM rules from the government.

Data on the increase in the mobility of the Indonesian people is taken from Google Mobility which is processed by BPS. Margo said community mobility in the first three months of 2022 was the best since the start of the pandemic.

“Mobility in the first quarter of 2022 is the best picture of mobility during the pandemic and almost all production activities in several places of activity have exceeded normal conditions,” he said.

Furthermore, in addition to improving community mobility, another factor that has contributed to the recovery in the transportation and warehousing sector is the existence of several events, both nationally and internationally. This also brings blessings to passenger transport.

Margo gave an example, in the first quarter of 2022, the number of air transport passengers grew by 58.13 percent (YoY).

“The existence of several events, both nationally and internationally, or indications of [increasing] transactions in e-commerce are some of the phenomena of supporting transportation and warehousing,” he said.
