Luhut Ensures Vladimir Putin Does Not Attend G20 Bali

The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, has certainly not attended the summit of the G20 Summit in Bali. This was conveyed directly by the Head of the Support for the Implementation of the G20 Event, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan.

“Yes, no, Putin was not present because earlier he said he had sent his foreign minister (Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov) to come. I think that is the highest,” he said when met at the Padma Hotel Resort, today.

According to Luhut, the Indonesian government respects the decision of the Russian government.

“But the president (Indonesian President Joko Widodo) has already said that he communicated and we hope that because of good communication it can reduce tensions between Ukraine and Russia,” he said.

Previously, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said he had a strong impression that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not attend the G20 summit in Bali on November 15-16.

Jokowi said his telephone conversation with Putin last week left a “strong impression” that the Russian leader would not attend the meeting in Bali.

In an interview with the Financial Times reported by Reuters on Tuesday (8/11), Jokowi said Russia was still welcome at the summit, which has so far been dominated by tensions over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

On that occasion, Jokowi also expressed his concern as the host of this year’s G20 if the forum summit would take place under the shadow of “very worrying” international tensions.

“The G20 is not for a political forum. It is for an economic and development forum,” said Jokowi.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is almost certain to attend the virtual summit of the G20 Bali Summit, on November 15-16, 2022.

His spokesman, Serhiy Nykyforov, told local broadcaster Suspilne quoted by Reuters on Tuesday (11/8/2022).

Meanwhile, last week Zelensky made it clear that he would not take part in the G20 summit in Bali if Russian President Vladimir Putin was also present.

Regarding this matter, Nikiforov did not explain whether Zelensky had changed his mind or not.

Previously, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) ensured that 17 heads of state had confirmed their presence at the G20 Bali Summit. Among those who will attend are President of the United States (US) Joe Biden and President of China Xi Jinping. “Yes, that’s for sure 17,” said Jokowi at the Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park (Tahura), Denpasar City, Bali, Tuesday (11/8/2022).

Regarding Zelensky and Putin, the Head of State expressed hope that both of them would attend. However, based on the information he obtained, both of them would be present if the situation in the two respective countries was more conducive than it is now.
