Indonesia has very abundant natural wealth, one of which is natural gas which is spread in various regions of Indonesia. Based on data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Maluku is an area with the most natural gas reserves in Indonesia.
Natural gas is an abundant energy commodity. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources noted that Indonesia has reserves of natural gas or natural gas of 41.62 trillion square cubic feet/TSCF in 2021.
The most proven natural gas reserves are in the Maluku region, namely 13,988 billion square cubic feet/BSCF. Maluku has several good oil and gas resources, namely the hydrocarbon basin in Bula, as well as the Masela block, which is very well known.
Papua is in second place with 11,412 BSCF. The potentially available energy resources in Papua are indeed quite large.
The next position is South Sumatra, with 4,428.26 billion square feet (billion square cubic feet / BSCF). The fifth and sixth positions are occupied by Sulawesi and Kalimantan, with natural gas reserves of 3,233.83 billion BSCF and 2,924.71 billion BSCF respectively.
Furthermore, oil and gas reserves in Indonesia are closely related to Tertiary sedimentary basins. Some basins have been identified in the vicinity of Papua Province whose distribution is to the north and south of Papua.
Two basins to the north of Jayapura have never been drilled, three basins have been drilled but have not yielded any discoveries, one (1) basin has yielded discoveries but not yet reached the production stage, and two basins have been produced.
The oil and gas potential in Papua is quite promising, some of the reserves in the Bird’s Head and Bintuni areas are already in production, while other areas are still in the exploration stage.
The exploitation of oil and natural gas is carried out through several oil and gas fields around Sorong such as the Klamono, Linda, Salawati, and around Bintuni fields. Production from these oil fields is generally still relatively small.
Furthermore, the Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK Migas) stressed its commitment to conducting low-carbon operations in the oil and gas industry.
This commitment is contained in the strategic plan for Indonesia Oil and Gas 4.0 or IOG 4.0.
One of the efforts that have been carried out to support the energy transition is the Jambaran Tiung Biru project. The project to guarantee gas supply will start operating on September 20, 2022.
