Post-pandemic economic recovery can be seen in various sectors, one of which is the automotive sector. Motorcycle sales in January 2023 were recorded at 608,244 units or soared 37 percent on an annual basis (year-on-year/yoy).

This number is the biggest achievement in motorcycle sales for the last three years in Indonesia based on data from the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI).

It is known, during the period 2020 to 2022, the previous highest sales of motorcycles were recorded at 588,269 units in November 2022.

Meanwhile, sales of domestic motorcycles in January 2023 monthly (month-to-month/mtm) also increased by 25.8 percent, considering that the previous month’s performance only reached 483,254 units.

Meanwhile, motorcycle sales in January 2023 were dominated by scooter types with a percentage of 90.10 percent. In second place was the underbone type with 5.33 percent, and lastly followed by the motorsport type with a percentage of 4.57 percent.

For information, sales of domestic motorcycles throughout 2022 were recorded at 5.22 million units. This number has succeeded in exceeding the minimum target set by AISI, namely 5.1 million units in the domestic market.

Referring to the same data, domestic motorcycle sales in 2022 increased by 3.2 percent compared to the previous year, namely 5.05 million units.

AISI Head of Commercial Division Sigit Kumala said that the biggest contribution to achieving the target of motorcycle sales in Indonesia in 2022 was the national economic condition which was starting to recover.

In another hand, this positive record was not accompanied by an export performance. This is because the export of Indonesian motorcycles in January this year was 39,269 units, down 23 percent compared to the same period last year.

In line with the annual performance, January 2023 motorcycle exports also fell 17 percent monthly compared to December 2022 export performance of 47,362 units.
