The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) noted that the earthquake occurred on Thursday (31/12) afternoon in Maumere and Nias on the last day of 2020 ahead of New Year’s Eve.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 rocked Maumere, East Nusa Tenggara at 17:18. The epicenter was at the coordinates of 8.97 south latitude and 122.32 east longitude to be precise in the sea at a depth of 40 km south of Maumere.

31 minutes later, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 rocked South Nias, North Sumatra.

The epicenter of the Nias earthquake is located at the coordinates of 0.32 North Latitude and 97.64 East Longitude to be precise at sea at a distance of 34 km of Southwest South Nias.

Citing Antara, the two earthquakes were both triggered by the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian Plate.

In the Maumere earthquake, rock deformation occurred at a medium depth of 116 km. Meanwhile, the Nias earthquake was triggered by rock deformation at a shallow depth of 23 km in the megathrust zone.

The two earthquakes had an impact on the shocks on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) III scale. The Maumere earthquake was felt in Maumere and Ende II-III MMI and Waingapu II MMI, while the Nias earthquake was felt in Teluk Dalam (Inside Bay) II-III MMI.

BMKG monitoring results show that the Maumere earthquake was followed by one aftershock, while the Nias earthquake was not.

The two earthquakes were not related because they are quite far from different earthquake sources.
