Xi Jinping: No Attempts to Start a New Cold War!

Joe Biden to Meet Xi Jinping Today in G20 Bali

Relations between China and the United States have been heating up recently. Responding to this, the President of China, Xi Jinping, finally spoke up. He stated that the Asia-Pacific region would not support any attempt to foment a new Cold War.

In his statement quoted by The Straits Times, Xi called for deeper and non-discriminatory cooperation among the region’s countries. He also urged increased connectivity between countries.

“The Asia-Pacific is not anyone’s backyard and must not be the arena for a great power contest. No attempt to foment a new Cold War will be permitted by our people or our time,” he said in written remarks at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. in Bangkok, Friday (18/11/2022).

“China will actively enhance the complementarity between the Belt and Road Initiative and other parties’ development strategies to jointly build a high-quality Asia-Pacific connectivity network.”

Xi, who is holding a series of high-level meetings with international leaders this week, is scheduled to speak at the summit. However, this was canceled due to schedule conflicts.

“Unilateralism and protectionism must be rejected by all; any attempts to politicize and weaponize economic and trade relations must also be rejected by everyone,” added his remarks.

Although he did not name the US specifically, the Asia-Pacific region has experienced a growing economic and political rift between Beijing and Washington. Most recently, the two heated up after Washington issued new regulations regarding the export of chips to China.

Despite the heat, Xi Jinping had a meeting with US President Joe Biden earlier this week at the Bali G20 Summit. This meeting was highlighted as a tension breaker between the two countries.

On Thursday, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said keeping open lines of communication between the US and China was critical to avoiding conflict and working together on challenges such as the climate crisis and health security.
