NTB’s Highest Inflation Contributed by Airline Tickets during the MotoGP

The Mandalika MotoGP event also contributed to large inflation in West Nusa Tenggara. This happened because of the increase in the airline tickets price during the race event.

It was noted that NTB’s combined inflation in March 2022 was recorded at 0.97 percent, an increase compared to February’s 0.07 percent deflation. The inflation in Mataram City was 1.08 percent, while in Bima City it was 0.59 percent.

The Bank Indonesia Representative Office for West Nusa Tenggara Province noted that the price of airline tickets included in the commodity group whose prices were regulated by the government in March 2022 experienced an inflation of 6.08 percent.

This figure is higher than the previous month which was recorded at 4.97 percent. Head of the BI NTB Representative Office Heru Saptaji explained that the increase in air ticket prices was due to high demand during the Mandalika MotoGP event on March 18-20, 2022.

“Based on the results of the Price Monitoring Survey [SPH] conducted by Bank Indonesia, in March 2022 there was a significant increase in the price of Lombok-Denpasar flight tickets reaching 71 percent,” explained Heru, quoted in a release on Thursday (7/4/2022).

Furthermore, data from Angkasa Pura I Lombok Airport during the Mandalika MotoGP period showed that arrivals at Lombok’s Zainuddin Abdul Majid International Airport reached 15,000 per day. This figure is a significant increase compared to before MotoGP which was only 4,500 passengers per day.

The massive arrival of passengers was also accompanied by a significant increase in ticket prices until the period of March 3, 2022, when the flow of passengers returned. Lombok Jakarta ticket prices are IDR 1.1 million – IDR 1.5 million, a significant increase compared to normal ticket prices starting at IDR 700 thousand.

Apart from the price of airline tickets, inflation in NTB was also contributed by the increase in the price of household fuel which was in line with the increase in the price of non-subsidized gas fuel, with an average increase of between Rp. 1,600 to Rp. 2,300 per kg.

“Based on the SPH, the average 12 kg LPG for the March 2022 period is IDR 170,000 per kg, an increase compared to the March 2021 average which was recorded at IDR 157,500 per kg,” said Heru.

Meanwhile, Core Ination or the core inflation group in March 2022 experienced inflation of 1.76 percent (YoY). CI inflation was driven by rising gold jewelry prices and house rental costs in line with global gold price movements and increased public mobility.

“Based on BI NTB monitoring, the price of gold rose 8 percent to Rp.861,350. Then the cost of renting houses and boarding houses increased due to the gradual start of face-to-face lectures,” said Heru.
