President Gives 1 Month for Tin Downstream

Tin Production

Downstream programs for several products continue to be promoted by the government. This time, the tin downstream project is getting attention. The government needs to pay more attention because Indonesia has the opportunity to determine the price of the world’s tin market.

Deputy of the Presidential Staff Office (KSP) Agung Krisdianto said Indonesia is the second largest tin producer in the world. Therefore, Indonesia has the opportunity to determine the price of the world’s tin market.

This can be achieved through a domestic tin downstream policy which will soon be implemented.

Agung said that the big vision of downstream is for economic transformation in Indonesia. Reflecting on the success of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) as the number 1 largest tin producer in the world, Indonesia can also follow the steps that have been taken by the PRC.

According to him, it’s useless if Indonesia can produce tin but it is exported abroad where later the results from the exported tin will return to Indonesia in certain forms such as electronics, battery components, and electric cars.

“It’s useless for us to send raw materials, then outside it is made into certain products, it could be electronic products, for battery components, electric cars, and so on. Then these products are sent to Indonesia. We can imagine this,” he said.

Therefore, if the tin downstream plan runs smoothly, it is considered to be able to add added value to Indonesia. In addition, labor absorption can also be maximized, as well as encourage state revenue from the tax sector.

On the other hand, the Government has formed a working group or working group to finalize or map out the government’s plan to boost the downstream in Indonesia.

The establishment of the tin downstream working group aims to ensure that the supply and demand of tin do not cause losses to industry players, both upstream and downstream. Especially with the government’s plan to stop exports soon.

The staff of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Irwandy Arif said the formation of this working group was based on the visit of Indonesian President Jokowi to PT Timah TBK. The purpose of this working group is to finalize the export ban policy.

In addition, the tin downstream strategy with the formation of this working group is a race against time. The reason, Irwandy said that the President of the Republic of Indonesia Jokowi gave 1 month for the working group to provide the results of its work.

“Our main strategy is to strengthen our downstream production. We are in a race against time because the President requested that within one month the results of the tin downstream working group can be completed and this can be used as material for the President’s decision making,” he said.
