The 2024 Sustainable Food Festival in Badung, Bali, brings together flavors from across Indonesia in a vibrant display of culinary tradition for tourists and locals alike. This event, held from October 30 through November 10, serves up a vast selection of Indonesian dishes, all prepared using locally sourced ingredients to uphold high standards of quality and sustainability.
According to John H. Nielsen, Director of Sustainability at the Bali Hotels Association (BHA), the festival is a unique opportunity to immerse guests in Indonesia’s culinary heritage.
“This event allows hotel guests to savor the taste of the archipelago through specially curated menus offered by BHA member hotels,” said Nielsen, as quoted by Antara on October 20, 2024.
Throughout the festival, BHA-affiliated hotels will be featuring menus tailored to highlight sustainable dining practices. Hotel chefs are tasked with creating high-quality Indonesian dishes that showcase the richness of local ingredients, supporting farmers and producers within the region.
By focusing on locally produced food, the initiative not only reduces environmental impact but also offers guests a chance to explore flavors from diverse islands across Indonesia.

“With a focus on local food production, we’re not only minimizing our carbon footprint but also discovering the distinct tastes that each Indonesian island has to offer,” Nielsen explained.
This annual event reinforces BHA’s commitment to sustainability. All ingredients used in the featured dishes are sourced from within Indonesia, embodying BHA’s goal to promote sustainable business practices that bring tangible benefits to local suppliers and communities.
Additionally, the festival bridges culinary heritage with modern gastronomy. Participating chefs will fuse traditional Indonesian flavors with contemporary techniques, presenting an experience that honors the country’s culinary legacy in an authentic and respectful way.
The Sustainable Food Festival also serves to strengthen the bond between the hospitality industry and local producers in Bali, enhancing collaboration toward long-term sustainability efforts across the Island of the Gods. Nielsen emphasized that this festival helps cultivate lasting connections within the local community, underscoring the shared commitment to sustainable practices that benefit the entire island and its people.
