Batam and Bintan Islands, which are located in the Riau Islands, will soon be connected by a bridge. The government will soon carry out the Batam-Bintan bridge construction, with a length of 14.75 km.

The Batam-Bintan bridge project, which was built under a government-business partnership (PPP) scheme, is said to be the longest bridge in Indonesia.

In addition, this project is also included in the 2020-2024 national medium-term development plan (RPJMN).

The Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) as the person in charge of the Batam-Bintan Bridge cooperation project (PJPK) is currently accelerating the project together with the Riau Islands Provincial Government.

The Director General of Infrastructure Financing of the PUPR Ministry, Herry Trisaputra Zuna, said that the Batam-Bintan Bridge project is included in the list of PPP projects this year. Meanwhile, investment for the construction of the Batam-Bintan Bridge reached IDR 14.74 trillion.

Based on a report submitted by the Director General of Infrastructure Financing of the Ministry of PUPR, Herry Trisaputra Zuna, in an RDP with Commission V of the DPR on Tuesday (24/1/2023), the project is currently entering the final business case (FBC) finalization stage and the signing of an MoU on the division of tasks and responsibility between the Ministry of PUPR and the Provincial Government of the Riau Archipelago.

Meanwhile, the Governor of the Riau Islands, Ansar Ahmad said the bridge that will connect Batam Island and Bintan Island will be the longest in Indonesia.

He said that the government had obtained loan funds from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) worth US$300 million or the equivalent of Rp.4.4 trillion.

Furthermore, the Batam-Bintan Bridge project is expected to be able to accelerate equitable development and reduce logistics costs between Batam Island and Bintan Island, as well as to streamline vehicle mobility from the two regions in the Riau Archipelago.

The Batam-Bintan Bridge is planned to be built along 14.74 Km with the distribution of 7.98 km for the PPP portion (Bintan Island – Tanjung Sauh Island) and 6.76 Km for the government support portion (Tanjung Sauh Island – Batam Island) which will be sourced from Foreign Loans.

Currently, PT PII is conducting a traffic study review related to the Minimum Revenue Guarantee (MRG) to mitigate the risk of traffic flow that does not match the projections at the start of operations.
