The north coast of Java is estimated to be submerged by seawater from 2030 to 2060. Therefore, the government believes that the Semarang – Demak toll road construction needs to be completed immediately.
The government itself seems to have prepared anticipatory steps for the rising sea level to the mainland of Central Java. One of them is by building the Semarang-Demak toll road.
The toll road above sea level will be integrated with the Semarang City Sea Wall. In addition, it also functions as a barrier to tidal flooding or flooding from sea tides, which is a problem for the capital city of Central Java Province.
The Semarang-Demak Toll Road has a total length of 26.7 km and is divided into two sections, namely Section 1 (Semarang – Sayung) of 10.69 km which is the Government’s portion and is currently in the stage of land acquisition to continue construction.
Meanwhile, Section 2 (Sayung – Demak) with a length of 16.31 Km is the portion of the Toll Road Business Entity (BUJT) PT. The Semarang Demak Housing Development, which is targeted for the end of this year, has completed its overall construction and can be operated.
“We hope that by the end of this year Section 2 can be operated to support the implementation of the Christmas and New Year holidays at the end of 2022, or can be functional if the operating decree has not been issued and enjoyed by the community together,” said Head of BPJT Danang Parikesit, in a statement quoted Monday (24/10/2022).
In addition, the government has also prepared a program for relocating mangrove areas around the construction of Section 1 of the Semarang-Demak toll road, the Semarang-Sayung section. There are 3 locations of mangrove areas to be relocated with a total area of approximately 46 hectares.
Efforts to preserve the mangrove area aim to maintain the function of the mangrove forest as a habitat for flora and fauna on the north coast of Java and protect the coastline, including reducing the risk of abrasion.
