The KCJB Fast Train Building Structure Is Claimed to be Earthquake-Resistant

Indonesia will soon have the most advanced fast train in Southeast Asia. The Jakarta-Bandung Fast Train (KCJB) is even claimed to be one of the trains with an earthquake-resistant structure.

Main Director of PT KCIC, Dwiyana Slamet Riyadi said the structural design of the KCJB project was made to withstand various potential natural disasters, including earthquakes. In carrying out its construction, quality is always paid attention to so that development results function optimally.

“The KCJB infrastructure structure has taken into account the conditions in Indonesia where earthquakes frequently occur. The KCJB infrastructure structure is designed to be earthquake resistant and can have a service life of up to 100 years,” Dwiyana said in a statement in Jakarta, Friday.

The highest earthquake ever to occur in Java has a magnitude of 8.0. This condition has been anticipated in the construction of the KCJB structure so that it can withstand earthquakes that cause severe damage, cracks in the ground to landslides.

The construction of the Jakarta-Bandung Fast Train project is carried out by considering the geological conditions along the route. The Jakarta-Bandung Fast Train Infrastructure Structure (KCJB) is designed to be earthquake resistant as a mitigation of potential earthquake disasters around the KCJB route.

Taking into account the reference earthquake zones and seismic conditions in Indonesia, KCJB infrastructure such as bridges, subgrades to tunnels along the alignment, are designed to have earthquake resistance of up to 8.0 to 9.0 on the Seismic Intensity Scale (equivalent to eight magnitudes).

Furthermore, according to the plan, Jakarta-Bandung fast train tickets will sell for Rp. 350,000 for the farthest distance and Rp. 150,000 for the shortest distance.

However, for the first 3 years, Fast Train tickets will sell for IDR 250,000 for the longest distance first.

Dwiyana said the tariff of IDR 250,000 for the first 3 years was a request from the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub). The aim is to attract public interest in the initial period of train operation.

“In the first 3 years, the tariff was Rp. 250,000. Of course, we hope this can be attractive again and there will be no subsidies. So selling at a loss for 3 years,” said Dwiyana at a joint meeting with Commission VI of the DPR, Wednesday (23/11/2022).

Dwiyana explained that tariff determination was based on assumptions generated by the University of Indonesia (UI) Polar Team related to the passenger willingness to pay (WTP) survey.
