Sung Y. Kim, the United States (US)’s Ambassador to Indonesia, announced the arrival of 3.5 million doses of Moderna‘s Covid-19 vaccine in Jakarta.

The amount adds to 4.5 million doses of the Moderna vaccine that the US had previously donated in July.

“To slow this spur in cases, it is important to work quickly and get as many safe and effective vaccines as possible. So that they can be given to the public as soon as possible,” Kim said.

“The US is proud and happy to be able to take on its role to help end the Covid-19 pandemic by contributing doses of vaccine to Indonesia. We will continue to support Indonesia’s efforts to provide the vaccine and help Indonesia to move closer towards the resumption of economic security,” he continued.

This shipment was sent through the COVAX Advance Market Commitment (COVAX AMC), a global initiative to support equitable access to the Covid-19 vaccine.

The US is known to have contributed USD 4 billion through Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance for COVAX AMC. The US contribution supports the purchase and delivery of Covid-19 vaccines to 92 countries, including Indonesia.

In addition, US President Joe Biden has also committed to providing 80 million safe and effective Covid-19 vaccines to countries that need them, including Indonesia.

Biden’s plan to donate 80 million doses includes more than 23 million doses for Asia, to keep the region as well Indonesia safe.
