Rainfall with moderate to heavy intensity flushed the South Tangerang area for a long duration. The rain intensity caused thousands of houses to be flooded.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) noted that six urban villages in South Tangerang City, Banten, were surrounded by floods which resulted in 1,252 housing units being submerged.

“Data compiled by the BNPB Control and Operations Center (Pusdalops) shows that 1,252 houses were submerged in six sub-districts that were surrounded by floods,” said the acting Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information and Communication Center Abdul Muhari in a written statement received in Jakarta, Wednesday.

The six villages that were flooded include Cipayung Village, Jombang Village, Pisangan Village in Ciputat District, Rempoa Village in East Ciputat District, Kedaung Village in Pamulang District, and Pondok Kacang Timur Village in Pondok Aren District.

Some of the areas were flooded with a Water Level (TMA) between 10 and 80 centimeters (cm).

“Although there were no fatalities, puddles of water at several points of the location had created traffic jams which had an impact on other public mobility. Currently, the rain has started to subside and the flooding is reported to be gradually receding,” said Abdul.

The Rapid Response Team (TRC) of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of South Tangerang City has carried out monitoring at several inundated water points using rubber boats. In addition to monitoring, the team also conducts further data collection and anticipation for things that are not desirable.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued weather early warning information stating that heavy rains are still likely to occur in the Greater Jakarta area until Friday (7/10).

BNPB appealed to the community and policymakers in the local area to remain vigilant and increase preparedness for potential disasters that could be triggered by weather factors.

Efforts, such as monitoring riverbanks with riverbanks, normalizing rivers and canals, and cleaning settlements drainage, should be carried out periodically to minimize the potential for aftershocks that are also caused by environmental spatial conditions.

“If it rains for more than an hour, people living on the banks of the river should evacuate to a safer place for a while,” said Abdul.

Previously, the BMKG had warned the public about the extreme weather that hit several parts of Indonesia. For this reason, BMKG urges the public to always be aware of potential disasters that lurk.
