Travel Regulations to Be Revised as Indonesia Moves Towards Covid-19 Endemic Phase

The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) is set to revise travel regulations as the global spread of the virus declines and the transition towards endemic Covid-19 progresses. The upcoming changes, which will be aligned with the guidelines outlined in Circular Letter (SE) from the Covid-19 Task Force No. 1/2023, will be communicated through a circular letter issued by the Minister of Transportation.

Adita Irawati, the spokesperson for Kemenhub, highlighted that the forthcoming circular letter will be promptly released. The revised travel regulations will be applicable across all modes of transportation, encompassing land, sea, air, and rail travel.

Adita emphasized the importance of disseminating the circular letter to operators and the public, serving as a crucial reference for implementation in the field.

With regards to health protocols during the transition period of endemic Covid-19, the recent SE No. 1/2023 issued by the Covid-19 Task Force brought notable changes to the travel requirements. Specifically, the mandatory use of masks as a prerequisite for domestic and international travel has been eliminated.

The circular letter grants individuals the freedom to forgo wearing masks if they are in good health and not at risk of Covid-19 transmission. However, it is strongly advised to wear masks appropriately when individuals are unwell or susceptible to Covid-19 transmission.

In addition, the Covid-19 Task Force has also revised its stance on mandatory Covid-19 vaccinations for travel purposes. The latest circular letter states that Covid-19 vaccination is now solely recommended rather than obligatory. It encourages individuals, especially those at high risk of Covid-19 transmission, to continue receiving Covid-19 vaccinations, including the recommended second booster or fourth dose.

The Ministry of Transportation’s proactive approach in revising travel requirements reflects the evolving situation as the world transitions towards the endemic phase of the pandemic. By adapting to the changing circumstances and aligning with the latest guidelines, Kemenhub aims to ensure the safety and well-being of travelers while facilitating a seamless travel experience.

As the circular letter is disseminated and implemented, operators and the public play vital roles in adhering to the revised requirements, further contributing to the overall containment of the virus and the restoration of normalcy in the transportation sector.
