Residents Across Bali Feel the Chill as Nighttime Temperatures Decline

Bali may be known for its tropical weather, but over the past few days, many residents have been reaching for blankets and jackets. Temperatures across the island have dropped noticeably, with the chill becoming most apparent during the night and early morning hours.

Some of the coldest conditions have been recorded in Bedugul, Tabanan. Temperatures in those area of Bali have fallen to as low as 10 degrees Celsius. In Denpasar, the lowest temperature recorded reached 22 degrees Celsius.

For people living in Bedugul, the recent weather has felt particularly intense.

A local resident, Dzulkifli, said temperatures between nighttime and dawn have been hovering around 10 to 11 degrees Celsius. Even during the day, temperatures only climb to about 16 degrees Celsius.

“The temperature is around 10 to 11 degrees Celsius at night until dawn. Bedugul is currently at its coldest,” Dzulkifli said on Thursday (July 2, 2026).

According to him, the cold conditions began around a week ago and have persisted since then.

“Even we, who are native to Bedugul, can’t handle it. It feels as cold as a refrigerator. We have to use two blankets at night,” he said.

The chilly weather is not confined to Bedugul. Similar conditions have been experienced in many parts of Bali.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) explained that colder temperatures during this period are a normal occurrence during the dry season.

Agus Mahendra, a forecaster at BMKG Region III Denpasar, said the temperature drop is linked to the sun’s apparent position, which is currently over the Northern Hemisphere. This situation creates a deficit in solar radiation for regions of Indonesia located south of the equator.

“And the Australian continent is currently in its winter period, with relatively high air pressure, resulting in the movement of cold air masses from Australia toward Indonesia through Bali and surrounding areas,” Agus told detikBali on Thursday (July 2, 2026).

He also pointed to another factor behind the cooler weather. Skies have generally remained clear with minimal cloud cover, allowing heat from solar radiation to escape directly into the atmosphere.

“As a result, the air near the surface feels colder, especially during the night and morning hours,” he said.

According to Agus, this phenomenon can occur across most of Bali despite differences in topography. Areas located at higher elevations, particularly mountainous regions, usually experience colder temperatures than lowland areas.

Data from BMKG showed that the minimum temperature recorded in Bali over the past 24 hours reached 20 degrees Celsius in Jembrana Regency. In higher-altitude areas, temperatures dropped to around 15 degrees Celsius.

“However, these automatic instruments can change depending on real-time conditions,” Agus said.

Despite the unusually cold feel, BMKG emphasized that the current weather pattern is entirely normal. The cycle repeats every year during the dry season, especially between June and August, when cooler air from Australia and reduced solar radiation combine to bring lower temperatures across Bali.
