The President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, criticized his minister regarding the increase in fuel oil (BBM) type RON 92 or Pertamax. He reprimanded the minister who took care of the increase in Pertamax, namely the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Arifin Tasrif, while in the Plenary Cabinet Session at the State Palace.

President Jokowi said that the Minister did not provide any explanation regarding the increase in Pertamax fuel prices.

“The minister did not give any explanation, regarding this, be careful! Why is Pertamax going up, please tell me, do you have empathy? Nothing? There is nothing related to energy (empathy). Is that what is called having a sense of crisis?” Jokowi asserted in giving an introduction to the Plenary Cabinet Session at the State Palace, Jakarta, Tuesday (5/4/2022).

President Jokowi said that the increase in the price of Pertamax fuel, which has been in effect since April 1, 2022, is unavoidable. Because the current situation is not easy. Both from a fiscal and monetary perspective, they were greatly influenced by the volatile global economy.

“Especially related to rising inflation in almost all countries. We must have this awareness and the impact will be felt by the community when we go down,” said Jokowi.

Furthermore, the president then explained that the inflation rate in the United States (US) has reached 7.9% (usually below 1%), the European Union at 7.5% (usually in the 1% range), and Turkey at 54%.

“Numbers like these will lead us to what I think we have been holding on to so that there won’t be an increase. But I don’t think the situation is possible. It’s impossible not to increase fuel prices, it’s impossible. Therefore, yesterday the price of Pertamax went up,” Jokowi said.

Therefore, he continued, this high vigilance must be carried out every day, every week.

“We must continue to calculate the price of gas, and especially in addition to the price of energy and food prices. These two things are very, very important that we continue to be aware of and must always be close together, consolidated so as not to make mistakes in making decisions,” said Jokowi.

“And once again beside the people, almost all countries have experienced this, we, our society, our people are also starting to feel the impact of rising inflation, rising energy, rising food prices,” he continued.

As previously known, on April 1, 2022, The increase of Pertamax was confirmed by Pertamina’s management. He stated that Pertamax’s price increase was around Rp. 3.500 – Rp. The 4,000 per liter adjusts to the spike in world crude oil prices. They claim, the price increase is still lower by around Rp. 3,500 of the economy.
