After previously meeting with the President of the United States, Joe Biden, this time Jokowi met Elon Musk at the SpaceX headquarters, Boca Chica Texas, on Saturday (14/5/2022) afternoon local time. They discussed the potential for cooperation in the future.

According to Jokowi, his visit this time was a follow-up to his order to the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan to speak with Elon Musk. This includes discussing future collaborations.

“A follow-up to my order to talk to Elon about investment, about technology, about innovation, and now I’m here and meet directly with Elon to discuss future collaborations,” Jokowi said in his statement, quoted Tuesday (17/5/2022).

Elon Musk said he was ready to explore cooperation with Indonesia. According to him, Indonesia has great potential and many fields.

“I think Indonesia has great potential, and I think we through Tesla and SpaceX will try some collaborations with Indonesia,” said Elon Musk.

The discussion of cooperation with Elon Musk is not the first time. Because at the end of 2020, Jokowi and Luhut had called the billionaire and businessman to discuss investment opportunities in Indonesian electric car companies.

He also added that he would try to cooperate through the two companies he owns, namely Tesla and SpaceX. He said he was interested in collaborating with Indonesia because it has potential in many fields.

The two sides also exchanged views on the electric car industry and the main components of electric batteries. In addition, Jokowi invited Elon Musk to see Indonesia as a launching pad for SpaceX.

At that time, Elon Musk responded to Jokowi’s invitation with a plan to send his team in January 2021. But not long after, Tesla reportedly built a factory in India and agreed with a nickel mining company in Australia.

“We will look closely at the form of cooperation in many ways because Indonesia has a lot of potentials. Moreover, Indonesia has a large population and continues to grow. This is good because we need a lot of people in the future.”

Jokowi was accompanied by several people at the meeting. Besides Luhut, there is also the Minister of State Secretary Pratikno and the Indonesian Ambassador to the US Rosan Roeslani.
