The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) has announced that it will only begin developing railway lines in the country’s new capital, IKN Nusantara, after 2025.
The director of Traffic and Railway Transportation at Kemenhub, Djarot Tri Wardhono, stated that his team is currently conducting a study of the route or plan for the railway track in Kalimantan, particularly in the IKN region.
According to Djarot, “The Kalimantan route closest to IKN is projected to be completed after 2025.”
He mentioned that the route would extend from Balikpapan to urban areas in IKN and that some parts of the route would follow the toll road being constructed by the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR).
When asked about the cost, Djarot said that his team cannot give a precise estimate at this time, but details about the cost will be available once the project enters the Detail Engineering Design (DED) stage.
President Joko Widodo plans to construct four railway tracks in IKN Nusantara, as stated in the Presidential Regulation No. 64 of 2022 regarding the National Strategic Spatial Plan for IKN Nusantara 2022-2042. The four railway lines will be divided into two parts: intercity railway lines and urban railway lines.
Intercity railway lines will consist of railway lines connecting Banjarmasin-Pantai Lango-Karang Joang-Sp Samboja-Samarinda and railway lines connecting WP KIPP-WP IKN Barat-WP IKN Timur 1-Sp. Samboja-Karang Joang-Bandar Udara Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman.
Meanwhile, urban railway lines will include the development of railway lines connecting WP KIPP-WP IKN Barat-WP IKN Timur 1-WP IKN Timur 2-WP IKN Utara and the development of railway lines connecting WP IKN Barat-WP IKN Timur 2.
According to Article 41, paragraph 1, the railway line network will be established to develop interconnection with the national regional network system, Kalimantan Island, East Kalimantan Province, and inter-regions within IKN.
The railway line network will be in the form of a public railway line network, which is part of the IKN transportation network plan.
The transportation network plan includes the road network system, network system, river network system, lake, and crossing network system, sea transportation network system, and mass public transportation system.
The railway network system includes the railway line network and stations. Railway stations are divided into two parts: passenger railway stations and operation stations.
The passenger railway stations consist of 14 stations, including Sentral Bumi Harapan Station in WP KIPP, Sentral Sepaku Station in WP IKN Barat, Simpang Tengin Baru Station in WP IKN Timur 1, and Bumi Harapan Station in WP KIPP.
Additionally, Pemaluan Station in WP KIPP, Bumi Harapan 2 Station in WP IKN Barat, Karang Jinawi 1 Station in WP IKN Barat, Sepaku Station in WP IKN Barat, Karang Jinawi 2 Station in WP IKN Timur 1, and Sukaraja 1 Station in WP IKN Timur 1 are included. Finally, Tengin Baru Station in WP IKN Timur 1, Karang Jinawi 3 Station in WP IKN Timur 2, Sukaraja 2 Station in WP IKN Timur 2, and Sungai Payang Station in WP IKN Utara are also.
