A Harley-Davidson motorcycle made in 1908 has become the most expensive motorcycle ever sold. The motorcycle is a Strap Tank model, named after the nickel-plated steel strap used to attach the oil and fuel tank to the frame.

It sold for $935,000 or IDR 14.49 billion at an auction in Las Vegas last month. Harley-Davidson only made 450 motorcycles in 1908, and only a handful still exist today, according to Mecum Auctions.

This record-breaking motorcycle still has most of its original parts, including the exhaust shield, engine belt pulley, wheels, tank, and seat cover. Currently, the motorcycle is mostly grey with red accent lines and a bright orange Harley-Davidson logo.

Restoration is one of the reasons why this motorcycle has such a high value, but even auction experts were surprised by the selling price. David Uihlein discovered the motorcycle in 1941 and restored it with the help of Paul Freehill.

“We marketed the bike well, and Harley is by far the most recognizable American motorcycle brand, so we felt like we would do well in the auction, but you’re always surprised when you sell the most expensive motorcycle ever,” said Greg Arnold, Mecum’s motorcycle division manager, as quoted by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

The Strap Tank is the oldest collectible Harley-Davidson motorcycle that can be owned, as earlier models have disappeared from history.

The crew built the Strap Tank model in a one-story factory building on Chestnut Street, now Juneau Avenue, in Milwaukee.
