The Number of Train Passengers Shows a Significant Increase

The mobilization of Indonesian people is increasingly smooth after Covid-19 Pandemic. This can be seen from the number of train passengers which showed a significant increase.

Throughout 2022 the number of train passengers in Indonesia tend to increase. However, the number is still below the pre-Pandemic level which is 30 thousand passengers per month in 2019.

According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) report, the number of train passengers in Indonesia reached 26,924 people in November 2022. The achievement fell 2.48% compared to the previous month (month-on-month/mom) but had increased 75.77% compared to A year ago (year-on-year/yoy).

In detail, the number of train passengers in Java in November 2022 reached 26,473 people, consisting of Jabodetabek train passengers 21,589 people, and outside Jabodetabek 4,884 people. Then there were 451 train passengers in Sumatra.

Cumulatively, the number passengers during January-November 2022 reached 247.29 million people, up 86.87% compared to the same period in 2021.

Passengers in the Greater Jakarta area rose 73.16% (yoy), non-jabodetabek Java rose 171.7% (yoy), and Sumatra rose 103.61% (yoy).

KAI emphasized that the public did not need to worry when going on the train because Kai had implemented a health protocol for customers from the beginning of the Pandemic Covid-19. However, prospective passengers who do not have requirements according to the provisions will be rejected to take the train.

Furthermore, PT Kereta Api Indonesia or KAI served 4,407,277 passengers during the Christmas and New Year (Nataru) trips in 2022/2023.

This figure is a cumulative number for 18 days from December 22, 2022, to January 8, 2023. This means that KAI serves an average of 244,849 passengers per day, aka an increase of 123 percent from the previous year’s Nataru period, which is 1,980,269 customers.

In Nataru 2023, KAI served 2,320,614 long-distance train passengers (KA) and 2,086,663 local train passengers.
