Travel plans to Bali will briefly come to a complete stop. For one full day, the island’s main gateway will go silent as part of a deeply respected religious observance. I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport will halt all flight operations for 24 hours during Nyepi, the Saka New Year 1948, which falls on Thursday, March 19, 2026.
The closure reflects respect for Hindu communities observing Catur Brata Penyepian, a day when all activities across Bali pause.
This temporary shutdown has been formally announced through Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) number A0096 issued by AirNav Indonesia. The restriction begins at 06:00 WITA on March 19 and continues until 06:00 WITA on Friday, March 20, 2026.
“During that period, there will be no regular commercial flights departing or landing at the airport,” said General Manager of PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, Nugroho Jati.
To avoid confusion, I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport authorities have worked closely with airlines and other stakeholders during Nyepi. The goal is simple. Make sure every traveler receives clear information. Airlines have also adjusted their schedules so passengers have time to rearrange their trips.

The impact is significant. A total of 440 flights will not operate during the closure. This includes 231 domestic routes and 209 international routes. Meanwhile, 19 aircraft will remain parked overnight at Ngurah Rai Airport throughout the 24-hour period.
Even with the shutdown, the airport will not be completely empty. Essential personnel will stay on duty. They are prepared to handle emergency situations, including medical evacuations or special flights that have received official approval.
Before the closure begins, flights will still run as scheduled. The final departures and arrivals are set for the evening of Wednesday, March 18, 2026. For domestic routes, the last departure is at 23:10 WITA, while the final arrival is at 23:05 WITA.
For travelers, this is a moment to plan carefully. One day can change everything.
