The national car sales performance grew by 20.8 percent in Semester I/2022. This is due to the economic recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic. Although car sales continued to grow, the growth was felt to be slowing.

As predicted by automotive industry players, wholesale sales of four-wheeled vehicles in June will be better than in May, which fell quite deeply. Even so, the figure is still below 80,000 units.

Based on data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), wholesale sales in June were 79,168 units. The realization rose 60.08 percent from the previous month to 49,453 units.

Although it grew quite significantly, sales in June were not like the previous months throughout 2022, which were absorbed above 80,000 vehicles.

In the first 4 months of this year, wholesale sales were 84,061 in January, 81,224 in February, 98,536 in March, and 82,879 units in April.

In total, car sales in the first semester of 2022 were 475,321 units. The realization grew by 20.80 percent compared to the same period last year, which was 393,466 units. Wholesale sales growth in June was in line with predictions. The previous month, demand fell 24.57 percent.

General Secretary of Gaikindo Kukuh Kumara said that several factors caused car sales in May to fall. At that time, working time was short because there were many national holidays.

The second factor is the Chinese government which has returned to lockdown due to the soaring Covid-19. This restriction makes semiconductors even more scarce.

Finally, the Eid effect is over. The government that allows going home makes people spend their money at home. As a result, their savings are running low.

“When viewed from the average short working day, it is actually still in adequate condition. Hopefully, he will recover soon because the working day is back to normal,” he said when contacted in the middle of last month.
