Coldplay Enthralled by Indonesian Audience, Promises to Come Back Again!

Coldplay made history with their first-ever concert in Indonesia, held at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium (GBK), Jakarta, on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. Expressing immense joy and awe at the audience’s atmosphere, the British band, led by vocalist Chris Martin, vowed to return to Indonesia.

Chris Martin, captivated by the incredible audience, conveyed his gratitude, stating, “Incredible audience. Thank you, I’m happy,” during a pause in their performance of “Sky Full of The Stars.” The vocalist, visibly impressed, iterated, “Absolutely amazing, first time coming to Indonesia. The audience is truly incredible. Thank you.”

Pledging a return to Indonesia due to the overwhelming response, Chris Martin affirmed, “I’m very happy. I promise to come back to Indonesia. Soon.”

Preceding this, Chris Martin engaged with fans, offering greetings and even sharing a poem. The concert, featuring the opening song “High Power,” marked Coldplay’s debut performance in Jakarta under the title “Music of Sphere.”

On the economic front, the Center of Economic and Law Studies (Celios) estimated a substantial turnover of IDR 130 billion from ticket sales for concert of Coldplay in Indonesia. Bhima Yudhistira, Director of Celios, detailed that the average ticket price was IDR 2.6 million, drawing an audience of 50,000.

Highlighting the economic impact, Bhima remarked, “Just one international-level concert, and the turnover from tickets alone reaches IDR 130 billion. This is a significant amount.” Projecting the potential impact, he suggested that if ten similar international concerts were hosted in Indonesia annually, the cumulative turnover could reach IDR 1.3 trillion.

This financial evaluation does not account for additional indirect impacts. Moreover, the concert’s presence was anticipated to stimulate diverse economic sectors, including MICE, event organizing services, advertising, ticketing, transportation, telecommunications, the food and beverage industry, and local SMEs surrounding the concert venue.

Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, aimed for substantial profits, targeting up to USD 75 million or approximately IDR 1.16 trillion (based on an assumed exchange rate of IDR 15,503/USD) from Coldplay’s ‘Music of the Spheres World Tour’ concert in Jakarta.

Sandiaga envisioned this concert as not only a cultural milestone but also a catalyst for tourism, expecting an influx of both domestic (wisnus) and foreign tourists (wisman), contributing significantly to Indonesia’s economic growth.
