Jokowi Met PM of Timor-Leste, Discussing Economic Strengthening

The President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), welcomed the arrival of the Democratic Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, Taur Matan Ruak, at the Bogor Palace, Monday (13/2/2023). The two heads of state discussed several cooperations and strengthening the economy.

In addition, Jokowi said that this meeting was a form of Timor Leste’s commitment to strengthening relations and cooperation.

Previously, Jokowi had also welcomed the President of Timor Leste, Ramos Horta in July. The intensity of the meeting between the two countries shows a commitment to continue to strengthen cooperative relations.

For information, the government system of Timor-Leste is a semi-presidential republic. This system adheres to the president as the head of state, but he does not have full power over the government. The head of government is led by a Prime Minister.

Furthermore, Jokowi also stated that he was happy that Timor Leste had been accepted in principle as a member of ASEAN, and had participated in the meeting as an observer.

The discussion that was held this time, continued Jokowi, related to efforts to strengthen economic cooperation.

At least in this meeting, there are 4 memorandums of understanding to be signed in the fields of economy, education, and industry.

The Prime Minister of Timor Leste was observed to be present at 9.50 West Indonesia Time. He was greeted by the Mayang Flower Dance, also accompanied by children wearing traditional clothes while waving red and white flags.

The event continued with a welcoming ceremony, which began with the singing of the national anthems of the two countries. Then the two countries inspected the troop ranks at the Palace, followed by the signing of the guest book from the Prime Minister of Timor Leste.

Then the two presidents planted sandalwood trees together. This is a routine activity when welcoming state guests at the Bogor Palace.

After that, the president was seen chatting with the Prime Minister of Timor Leste while walking towards the oval room to hold a bilateral meeting.
