President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has officially announced the declaration or final results of the 42nd ASEAN Summit held in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) from May 9th to May 11th, 2023.

The President expressed his satisfaction with the successful and productive outcome of the summit and affirmed Indonesia’s commitment to a strong ASEAN that can meet challenges and maintain its central role in the region.

In his statement, President Jokowi emphasized the importance of focusing on the people’s interests and addressing key issues, such as protecting migrant workers and combating human trafficking. He urged ASEAN member states to take strong action against the perpetrators of these crimes.

The President also addressed the crisis in Myanmar, calling it a violation of human values that cannot be tolerated. He stressed the need for inclusivity and involving all stakeholders in implementing the Five-Point Consensus, stating that Southeast Asia’s credibility is at stake.

President Jokowi emphasized the importance of ASEAN unity, stating that without it, it would be easy for external forces to divide ASEAN. He further expressed that no ASEAN member state wants such a situation, and that there should be no party within or outside ASEAN that benefits from internal conflicts in Myanmar. He called for an end to violence and the protection of the people.

In addition, the President highlighted the importance of strengthening economic cooperation, with ASEAN agreeing to build an electric vehicle ecosystem and become a significant part of the global supply chain, making industrial downstreaming a key factor.

The implementation of local currency transactions and digital payment connectivity between countries is also set to be strengthened.

The President’s remarks were part of several important conclusions drawn from the 42nd ASEAN Summit. His call for unity, inclusivity, and a focus on the people’s needs is a reflection of ASEAN’s commitment to ensuring the region’s continued stability and prosperity.

The declaration agreed upon by ASEAN member states, which likely includes about ten points, is a significant achievement that will contribute to the region’s progress and development.
