Wae Rebo, the picturesque village often called the “village above the clouds,” has reopened to tourists after being closed for nearly two months due to extreme weather. Located in Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), the remote village welcomed visitors again on Monday, March 10, 2025, following a period of restoration and evaluation of its tourism management.
“For almost two months, Wae Rebo remained closed. During that time, we carried out repairs and restoration efforts while also evaluating 18 years of tourism development in the village. Today, the Wae Rebo Cultural Preservation Institute officially reopens it as a tourist destination,” said Benyamin Semandu, Vice Chairman of the institute, in a written statement received on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.
Before allowing tourists back in, local communities participated in awareness programs to balance tourism with their primary livelihood as farmers. “This is important so that if another closure happens, the impact on their economy won’t be too severe,” Benyamin explained.

The reopening was met with enthusiasm from regional authorities, including Manggarai’s Head of Tourism and Culture, Aloisius Jebarut. He praised the efforts of the Wae Rebo Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) and encouraged tourists to start planning their visits again.
“With tourism activities resuming in it, we hope visitors who had to postpone their trips can now reorganize their travel plans and once again experience the beauty of Wae Rebo,” he said.
Wae Rebo stands at approximately 1,000 meters above sea level, making access to the village both challenging and rewarding. Its traditional cone-shaped houses and breathtaking mist-covered landscapes make it one of Indonesia’s most unique destinations. The village gained international recognition after winning an award at the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2023.
Now that it has reopened, travelers can once again experience the magic of the village above the clouds while contributing to the local economy.
