A trip to Mount Bromo during the holiday season may sound tempting, but travelers planning a visit in late May should double-check their schedules. One of Indonesia’s most famous natural destinations will temporarily stop tourism activities as local communities prepare for one of their most important traditional ceremonies.
The Mount Bromo area will officially close to visitors during the annual Yadnya Kasada ritual. The decision was announced by the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (TNBTS), with the closure scheduled to take place from May 30, 2026, until June 2, 2026.
The temporary closure follows a circular letter issued by the Head of the Tengger Traditional Religious Council regarding the implementation of the 2026 Yadnya Kasada ceremony. The ritual is an important spiritual tradition for the Tengger community and is held every year around the Bromo area.
“The closure of the Bromo area will take effect from May 30, 2026, at 00:00 WIB until June 2, 2026, at 23:59 WIB for the Kasada ritual,” said TNBTS Head Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, as quoted on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
Following the circular, TNBTS also issued Announcement Letter Number PG.7/T.8/TU/HMS.01.08/B/05/2026 concerning the closure of tourism activities at Mount Bromo and nearby areas during the Yadnya Kasada ritual period.

During the closure period, access to the mountain region will be strictly limited. The area, which sits at an elevation of 2,329 meters above sea level, will only be open to members of the local community participating in the ritual process.
The closure will continue on June 2 for another important reason. Authorities have scheduled environmental cleanup activities following the completion of the Yadnya Kasada celebration.
“The area will only remain open for officials and members of the community who are involved in the environmental cleanup activities,” he said.
Tourists and visitors will not need to wait long before returning. Public access to Mount Bromo is expected to resume on Wednesday, June 3, starting at 01:00 WIB.
The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority also called on visitors and tourism businesses to respect the regulations and honor local traditions that continue to be preserved by communities around the mountain.
Despite the temporary closure, Mount Bromo continues attracting a large number of visitors. Tourism data from January through May 2026 showed that the destination welcomed 344,039 travelers. Domestic tourists made up the largest portion with 332,432 visitors, while international arrivals reached 11,607 people.
The numbers highlight how strong Bromo’s appeal remains, both among local travelers and visitors from overseas. For those planning a trip, checking the calendar first could save a long journey from ending at a closed gate.
