The relocation of the nation’s capital to East Kalimantan is underway. This time the construction is entering phase 1. President Joko Widodo said the construction of the National Capital (IKN) of the Archipelago would only be completed 15-20 years from now. He said the construction of a new capital city was not easy.

He hopes that the Archipelago Capital Authority will be active in development so that the process of moving the capital can be carried out quickly. He continues to encourage infrastructure in the archipelago to be built immediately.

“This is a gigantic job, it’s a huge job. So, it’s also not an easy job, it’s a complicated job, it does take a long time. We estimate that it will take 15-20 years to complete,” said Jokowi, broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat’s Youtube channel, Tuesday (15/3).

Furthermore, he also asked for help and support from various parties in the success of moving the capital city. Moreover, he expects the support of all elements of society.

Jokowi explained that the relocation of the nation’s capital was an effort by the government to equalize development. According to him, the new state capital in Kalimantan will reduce the burden on population density and the economy on the island of Java.

“The most important thing is that this move is for equity, for justice because we have 17 thousand islands, 56 percent of which are in Java, 156 million of Indonesia’s population is on Java Island, even though we have 17 thousand islands,” he said.

He said IKN Nusantara will be built with the concept of a forest city. The new nation’s capital city will stand on the forest by prioritizing environmental sustainability.

Previously, many parties were against the decision which was considered to be destroying Kalimantan’s forests.

However, Jokowi emphasized that the government would not clear Kalimantan’s forests for the development of the Nusantara IKN. The government, he said, would rehabilitate the damaged forests.

“What we want to do is forest rehabilitation and reclamation of the existing mining sites. Indeed, a lot of forests have been encroached upon by the community and some of them have to be repaired and rehabilitated,” he said.

It is known, In 2022-2023, the initial stage of construction will begin in some of the central government’s main areas (KIPP). For the first phase, housing for ASN, TNI, Polri, and BIN will be built. Housing is formed in the form of landed houses or apartment units.

Then, to support the construction of this early stage of development, several supporting facilities such as places of worship, markets, and consumption accommodation were also built by the government around the location of the new National Capital City (IKN).

Furthermore, the relocation of residents will begin with the TNI, Polri, and BIN in 2023. Then, the relocation of representatives of the executive, legislative, judicial, and ASN bodies will begin in early 2024.
