The proposed construction of a beach club in Sanur has ignited a heated debate among various stakeholders. While some local figures and residents are in favor of the project, others have voiced strong opposition. In light of these developments, Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno, Indonesia’s Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, has clarified that the focus for Sanur will remain on health tourism.
During a recent statement made in Badung, Bali, Sandiaga addressed the contentious issue surrounding the beach club project planned for Jalan Danau Tamblingan in Sanur, Denpasar. The area has recently faced traffic congestion problems, which has only intensified the discussion.
“After a comprehensive review, we have decided not to move forward with the beach club project. The government is committed to advancing health tourism through Special Economic Zones (KEK) and will instead direct efforts towards wellness tourism in Sanur,” Sandiaga stated.
He further emphasized that Bali’s tourism should be grounded in its cultural and regional heritage. “Bali’s tourism is fundamentally based on its culture and regional identity,” Sandiaga added.
The Minister highlighted the importance of community support and involvement in any new development project. “For any construction to proceed, it must have the backing of the local community and the engagement of local leaders to ensure a positive reception,” he said.
Sandiaga Uno noted that he had learned about the beach club proposal through reports indicating that construction banners had been placed at the proposed site. Upon further investigation, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy discovered that the project lacked the necessary permits and had not undergone community consultation.
This revelation underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that development projects align with local interests and adhere to regulatory requirements.

As previously reported, the Denpasar City Government has announced that it will reassess the project.
Denpasar Mayor I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara stated, “We will review the project. We need to determine if it will truly be a beach club or just another type of business,” during an interview at Graha Sewaka Dharma on Monday, July 29, 2024.
The proposal for the club began circulating when discussions around the Icon Bali Mall arose. Jaya Negara instructed the licensing department to halt any permits for beach clubs in the Sanur area.
Construction of a beach club in Sanur is not permitted without the necessary approvals. The only exception would be if the developers received approval from the central government. However, Jaya Negara admitted he was unaware if the club had such authorization.
