Indonesia Now Only Has 17 International Airports from the Previous 34 Airports. This is stated in Ministerial Decision Number 31/2024 concerning the Designation of International Airports issued on April 2, 2024.
Ministry of Transportation Spokesperson Ardita Irawati explained that the general purpose of this designation is to boost the national aviation sector.
This is because some airports that rarely serve international flights actually feed their passengers into hubs abroad.
“Ministerial Decree 31/2004 was issued with the aim of protecting international flights post-pandemic by making airports hubs for international connections in our own country,” Ardita said in a statement on Friday (4/26/2024).
“Until now, most international airports only serve flights to certain countries and not long-haul flights, so international hubs are actually enjoyed by other countries,” she said.
With the reduction in the number of international airports in Indonesia, there are now only 17 airports with that status, namely:

According to data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation of the Ministry of Transportation, out of the 34 international airports opened from 2015-2021, airports serving scheduled commercial flights to and from various countries are only Soekarno-Hatta (Jakarta), I Gusti Ngurah Rai (Bali), Juanda (Surabaya), Sultan Hasanuddin (Makassar), and Kualanamu (Medan).
Meanwhile, some international airports only serve short-haul flights to/from one or two countries.
Other international airports only occasionally operate international flights, and some do not have any international flight services at all. These last two criteria for airports cause their operations to be ineffective and inefficient in utilization.
However, airports with domestic airport usage status can still serve international flights for specific purposes temporarily.
